August 2002 - Faculty Member Earns EdD
Dr. Beth Carson, Assistant Dean and Assistant Professor, has
successfully defended her dissertation and completed requirements
for the EdD
in Curriculum Leadership from Northern Illinois University.
Dr. Carson's dissertation was, "A Comparison of Evidence of
Watson's Carative Factors in Performance Appraisals for Medical
Surgical Registered Nurses in the State of Illinois." Dr. Carson
requested performance appraisals from 201 hospitals classified
as offering medical surgical services in Illinois. 87 usable
tools were received and coded by hospital size and religious/non-religious
based, as well as, the absence, partial presence, or total presence
of each of Jean Watson's ten carative factors. From her research,
Dr. Carson came to the following three conclusions: there is
limited
representation of Watson's carative factors in the investigation;
there is little difference between religious and non-religious
facilities
and the presence of the carative factors; and size of facility
did not seem to be associated with the appearance of Watson's
carative
factors.

May 2002 - College of Nursing Faculty Member Finalist in CHA Proposal
The Catholic Health Association (CHA) of the United States recently
invited members to submit proposals for how the Catholic health
ministry can create a stable workforce. The proposal submitted by
Virginia Burton, MSN, RN, a faculty member at the Saint Anthony
College of Nursing, was one of the five finalists.
In its notification letter, Reverend Michael Place, president and
chief executive officer of the CHA, wrote that the "selection committee
was very impressed with the comprehensive approach and the potential
of this idea. Congratulations on being a finalist and thank you
again for your excellent contribution."
In her proposal for "Building a Stable Nursing Workforce," Burton
advocates the formation of a long-term council of nursing leaders
who are capable of research and dialogue and of redesigning nursing
practice models. Her concept addresses the workforce issue through
research, dialogue, redesign and examination of desired outcomes.

May 2002 - Nursing Student Project Helps Children at Rescue Mission
As part of their Community Clinical, students at the Saint Anthony
College of Nursing are required to meet an evidence-based need through
a project contribution for the Rockford Rescue Mission. Monica Lindquist,
a senior at the College of Nursing who works on 4 East (medical
telemetry), recently completed her Community Health Clinical.
In her summary, Monica wrote that her project was designed to "help
instill hope in the many children who come through the Rockford
Rescue Mission." Basing her project on research demonstrating that
children express their hopes most effectively through drawings,
Monica decided to make kits containing Christian coloring books,
drawing paper pads and sets of crayons.
After speaking to her Church congregation about the project, Monica
was pleased when Church members supported the project. On Monday,
May 1, Monica delivered over 100 assembled kits, which will be distributed
to children who come to Serenity House at the Rockford Rescue Mission.
Monica's completed project included a narrative about the need at
the Rescue Mission, evidence of the need based on research literature
and her assessment, and how the project intervention will meet the
need. All of us congratulate Monica on her impressive project.
